And so it begins.

Welcome to Prone to PR!

To start, I’d like to ease the suspicions of any new visitors who may be put off by the slightly pretentious blog title I’ve chosen: Yes, I do understand that I’m new to this whole experience and my affinity for public relations stems from only one fractured year of studying the topic. Still, extensive knowledge in a subject has never been a prerequisite for enjoying it! I would guarantee that there are plenty of wildly successful PR practitioners who would balk at the idea that their learning process ends at a certain point in their career. The differentiating qualities between myself and PR professionals would be a matter of mere numbers and resume bullet points – the desire to learn and grow in the field is a unifying trait we can all agree on. Since blogs are meant to be a tool to connect on a personal level, we’ll use that shared ambition as our medium of interaction here.

As a public relations student here at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (phew!), I’ve been fortunate enough to learn and interact with some fantastic students and teachers. In a class of 16, our interests seem to span the entire sphere of professional objectives; nevertheless, we are bound by a common sense of professionalism and desire to improve, which engender a fantastic balance of competition and camaraderie.

Personally, I’m looking to pursue a career in the public affairs field, ideally in a position that allows me to operate on the international stage and facilitate interaction between different cultures. Considering that PR is just the initiation and maintenance of mutually beneficial relationships, who could disagree with such an honest foundation for a career? Right now, the idea is that several years of Arabic classes and following Middle Eastern affairs will pay off and create a fantastic opportunity for me in that region. In reality, it’s just too early to know.

I intend to use this blog as a forum for PR-related topics, but I must warn you in advance that some meaningless personal drivel may find its way on here in a moment of excitement or passion. Naturally, my continued support of Liverpool FC – and the footballing world as a whole – struggles to find a forum for discussion and interaction in Eugene, Ore. Still, I promise to keep it to a minimum. Or maybe not.

I’m very much looking forward to updating this on a regular basis and interacting with any of the fine people who may stop by for a peek. Regardless of your opinion, you’re welcome and encouraged to share it openly and honestly here!
